Overview Many areas of research and commerce are becoming increasingly dependent on the use of data and computational resources that are distributed over the internet. This programme aims to provide students with an understanding of the techniques used to provide these distributed computational capabilities and to prepare them for a career applying them in either academia or the commercial IT sector. Edinburgh is one the major centres of research into the application of distributed computing technologies to support science. This domain is often called e-Science, and Edinburgh is the home of the UK National e-Science Centre (NeSC), run in collaboration with the University of Glasgow. The University of Edinburgh has built upon that the expertise to develop a unique MSc programme in Distributed Scientific Computing, which may be taken full-time in one year or part-time in two or three years. The core courses in the MSc are taught by staff from NeSC, the School of Physics and Astronomy and the School of Informatics who are at the forefront of research and training in the field, while students can choose from a wide range of options, to create a syllabus tailored to their individual interests and career goals. The programme comprises lectures, practical exercises, tutorials and individual study, and will be assessed by a combination of exams and coursework, with the coursework including individual and group assignments Careers Prospects The MSc prepares students from a range of backgrounds for a number of different careers: 1.Science graduates will develop expertise which will help them succeed in doctoral research in a field related to their first degree or in the development of e-Science technologies or techniques or, equally, they may embark on a career developing software to support scientific research, in either academia or the commercial sector. 2.Computer science graduates can undertake doctoral research in a range of areas within computer science and e-Science or can move into software development, either in support of scientific research or within those parts of the commercial IT sector that use distributed computing technologies. 3.Those coming from a commercial IT job will develop expertise in distributed computing which may open up new opportunities for them within the commercial IT sector or see them move into scientific software development. Students from the first few MSc classes have followed almost all these paths. Entry Requirements Applications are encouraged from graduates of all areas of science, engineering and computer science, and from those currently working in a relevant field. Entrance requirements are a good honours degree or equivalent work experience, and proven competence in computer programming. Further information Further information about the programme can be found online at www.nesc.ac.uk/msc. Details of the application procedure can be found at http://www.ed.ac.uk/studying/postgraduate/applying/. Overview The Crucible Centre is a place where researchers and academics from across the whole of UCL can come together to meet the challenges of lifelong health and wellbeing against the backdrop of today’s vastly extended life expectancy. Supported by over £3million of funding from 4 Research Councils (BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC and MRC), CRUCIBLE provides researchers from across the whole of UCL with ways of meeting, collaborating and developing interdisciplinary research projects. Outside the university gates, CRUCIBLE seeks to ensure its remit covers training medical, social services and other professionals to cope with these questions over the next 50 years. It is vital that students learn today how they can gain from understanding that solutions to these questions are to be found interlinked across many disciplines. CRUCIBLE has a PHD programme that emphasises this and provides future leaders and problem solvers with the tools to transfer this knowledge into the wider society and thus will strengthen their future careers. Value of this studentship The studentship advertised here is based in at least two departments are highly multidisciplinary. The studentship advertised here is based in different departments but is part of the Crucible Centre The 2010 stipend has not yet been set by MRC; as a guide, the 2009 stipend for London is £15,500. Fees are funded at the UK/EU rate. This is a four year studentship. The Centre for International Health and Development at the Institute of Child Health carries out research into the effectiveness of community-level interventions in developing countries, including Nepal, Malawi and rural India. Often the research is carried out by means of ‘cluster randomized trials’ where, for example, a number of villages or regions receive an intervention, while others are treated as controls and do not gain the benefit of the programme if it turns out to be efficacious (at least during the trial period), but are also saved any risks associated with it. Furthermore in some cases the programme offers what could be called a ‘second-best solution’, below a standard or recommended package of care, in view of resource constraints in the area under study. This work, and similar work by other research groups, raises a host of ethical questions, especially concerning the circumstances in which using a cluster randomized trial is legitimate, and when it is acceptable to offer a second best solution. The successful candidate will be expected to write a PhD thesis on one or more the ethical questions that arise in the context of such work. Eligibiliy Requirements Applicants should have a background in philosophy at undergraduate or masters level, and be able to demonstrate an interest in health issues in the developing world. The first year of the project will include taking a number of Masters level courses in international health and development and research methods in health to provide the necessary grounding for the research project as a whole. How to apply Interested applicants should contact Prof. Jonathan Wolff, Department of Philosophy (j.wolff@ucl.ac.uk) Please kindly mention Scholarization.blogspot.com when applying for this opportunity
