Sweden: POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP in chemistry, within the discipline of chemical physics at Lund University

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

Overview The project is devoted to study energy flow in molecular light-harvesting antennas using single molecule spectroscopy (SMS) and fluorescence microscopy techniques. Particularly interesting antennas are J-aggregates – organized ensembles of hundreds of molecules with coherently coupled excited states. SMS makes visible phenomena like fluorescence blinking and fluctuations of other optical property that are not observable in bulk materials due to ensemble-averaging. These phenomena gives us “inside” information on energy redistribution between chromophores and on excited state quenching by generating of “dark” states. With new techniques developed in our group it will be possible to measure geometrical parameters (size, shape etc) of individual nano-antennas and correlate them with energy transport properties. Qualifications: Expertise/qualification required from the candidate: master degree in chemistry or physics; strong basic education in general physics, physical chemistry, optics, laser physics, mathematics and quantum mechanics; experience in programming; experience in operation with general electronic equipment (generators, oscilloscopes etc). Additional expertise: Experience/education in optical/fluorescence microscopy; courses on solid-state physics; computational mathematics and programming; working experince in a laser lab.Regulations concerning appointment as a full PhD student can be found in HF 5 Chap 1-7§§ and SFS 1998:80. February LSAT cancellations: what to do if your test center closed

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

If your LSAT administration was canceled this weekend, you should be getting another email from the LSAC in the next few days; when weather gets in the way of an exam, they try to schedule a make-up test within two to three weeks. Here are some things you should do if your LSAT was canceled: Hang on to your admission ticket; this will get you into the make-up test when it’s scheduled. If schools are waiting on your LSAT score, give them a call to explain that your test was delayed. Keep practicing! A postponement is disappointing, but it’s a great chance to take a few more practice tests. For students whose Knewton LSAT prep memberships were set to end last weekend, we’re extending your courses until the make-up exams are finished. Next weekend is a holiday, so chances are most re-tests will be the weekend of February 19th or 26th. In the meantime, keep up the hard work!

Great Lakes, Chennai to accept XAT scores and also conduct its own test for admissions 2010

Tags: , , , , , , ,

Great Lakes Institute of Management , (Great Lakes), Chennai becomes the second institute to come up with alternatives to accepting the CAT scores for their admission process 2010 after Mudra Institute of Communication, Ahmedabad . Professor T N Swaminathan, Director Admissions, External Relations & Associate Professor – Marketing, Great Lakes, Chennai told PaGaLGuY that apart from accepting GMAT (including 2010) and CAT (2008 and 2009) scores, they will also accept XAT 2010 scores and in addition, conduct their own admission test in the middle of March. According to Swaminathan, the decision to introduce alternate admission procedure was taken due to the ongoing irregularities in CAT, which includes the PIL filed against CAT convener, Director, IIM Bangalore and Principal Secretary, Union Human Resources Development Ministry. Hence, the updated admission process for Great Lakes, Chennai will be as under: a) If you had planned to use your existing GMAT or CAT ‘08 score, you should have applied on January 3, 2010. b) Any candidate who plans to applying through either his CAT 2009, GMAT 2010 or XAT 2010 score can apply to the institute by February 7, 2010. c) Candidates who do not wish to apply through their CAT 2009 score and have not taken XAT or GMAT can take the Great Lakes’ admission test. As of now, the test will be held on the first or second weekend of March 2010 and will be an online test administered in six to seven centers across India. A nominal fee (yet to be decided by the institute) will be levied for the test; more details will be up on the institute’s website shortly. Swaminathan says, “Prospective students are advised to look out for formal communication on our website, other portals and press over coming days. Please do not hesitate to speak to any of our admission committee members for any clarification you may require.” Last date for applying to the Great Lakes admission test is also February 7, 2010. As candidates will apply through a plethora of entrance tests scores in the 2010 admission process at Great Lakes, Chennai, a question of standardization of scores might occur. According to Swaminathan, standardization of scores will be taken care of by using advanced statistics methods and the candidates need not worry as all scores will enjoy equal weightage. However, the breakup and the standardization procedures or guidelines will be kept confidential and will not be disclosed to students.

B-schools accepting CAT score contemplate alternative admission criteria

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Concerned with the events surrounding the conduct of CAT 2009, many business schools that accept the CAT score for their admissions are on alert and some are already contemplating alternative criteria for their 2010 admission season. We spoke to some of the directors of such b-schools and realised that an alternate action plan, although not very evident, is in the offing. Taking a stand, Dr CS Venkata Ratnam, Director, International Management Institute (IMI), New Delhi told PaGaLGuY, “We might have our own test” for admission in the absence of corrective action by the CAT authorities. Said Shweta Chhabra, Academic Manager at SP Jain Center for Management, Dubai, “Although a decision is still to be taken by the management, we might make it compulsory for CAT 2009 candidates to take our internal aptitude test and might treat them as candidates without a score.” Note that SP Jain Dubai also accepts GMAT scores, will accept the CAT 2008 score and also has its own internal aptitude test apart from the CAT scores. Prof Sudeep S Kumar, Associate Professor and Admissions Coordinator of TA Pai Management Institute, Manipal (TAPMI), thinks that the moment a test is distributed over a certain period of time, ‘normalization suffers’. This combined with the way the things are managed might make the management at TAPMI ‘reduce the weightage’ given to the CAT score. According to him, a candidate’s marks in graduation and other aspects will play a significant role in his admission to the institute. At Institute of Financial Management and Research (IFMR), Chennai, the group discussion and personal interview may be made stricter to screen candidates whose luck had more than its fair chance in their CAT scores, according to Prof S Ganapathy, Head of Placements and External relations. The institute can also use XAT scores as a standby for such a scenario.
